Dybbuk Movie: Emraan Hashmi On His Love For Horror Films

Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi who will be seen in the upcoming Dybbuk movie: The Curse is Real, said on Wednesday that he will not stop doing horror movies as his rendezvous with the genre is not yet over. This film is set against the backdrop of Mauritius. The Dybbuk movie release date has been scheduled for 29 October 2021. Watch the Dybbuk movie trailer now.

This movie is a Hindi remake of Ezra, which is a Malayalam horror film released in 2017 that stars Prithviraj Sukumaran as the lead.

Emraan Hashmi’s Take On Horror Movie

Hashmi was previously featured in many of the horror films that were backed by Mahesh Bhatt like the Raaz franchise in the initial years of his acting career and then later in “Ek Thi Daayan”, which Vishal Bharadwaj produced. In an interview, Emraan Hashmi said,

“My love story with horror films isn’t over yet. I thought it was over five years ago but it isn’t and this will continue. This new film is different from the films that I did before. This film takes the horror quotient higher. The narrative style is new and unique.”

The actor was talking at the trailer launch of the film. The film has been directed by Jay K, who was the director of the original film as well. He takes the name “Dybbuk” from a Jewish mythology where Dybbuk is a malevolent possessing spirit that is thought to be the spirit of a dead person. In an interview, Emraan Hashmi praised the director of the film for this seamless blend of Jewish mythology with Indian culture. He said,

“Jewish mythology and our culture are different. I wasn’t aware of it and I was intrigued to know about it.”

He further added that he does not understand why the mainstream actors of Bollywood shy away from being a part of horror movies. He said,

“I have been watching horror films since childhood. I enjoy this genre. The wave of horror comedies (that has come) is a sub-genre. This (horror) is the mother genre. I believe this (horror) genre is not explored much in our country.”

He further added that,

“Maybe most stars don’t understand this genre, so they don’t give their consent and hence the budget is not much for these films. I hope more stars do horror films because the success ratio is good. Even though fewer horror films have been released, whenever they come out, they do good business.”

According to Jay, the horror genre is unexplored in India and that there should be more films being made in this space. He said,

“Horror has immense potential and it is untapped in India. The mainstream stars don’t do horror films so budgets are less. I think it is a genre that has immense potential. There should be more home-grown horror films as our culture is vast and we have a lot of folklore. It is high time we explore the genre.”

“The film has been shot internationally and the aesthetics are different from other horror films. Like, how Jay has integrated Jewish culture, beliefs, and supernatural things. It is beautiful and we believe it should not just be restricted to the Indian audience.”
